Violist Susan Bierre graduated from the Queensland Conservatorium of music at Griffith University before completing her postgraduate studies in the Netherlands with the renowned violist Rainer Moog. She held a principal position in the Netherlands Radio Chamber
Orchestra, working with chief conductors Frans Bruggen, Ton Koopman, Péter Eötvös and Hans Zender. Her work in Europe involved regular performances in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam as well as taking part in European music festivals including the Gaudeamus Festival, Detmold Music Festival and the Holland Festival. As the solo violist in the contemporary music group, Xenakis Ensemble, she has toured extensively throughout Europe and Japan. Since returning to New Zealand, she has established a varied musical life as a recitalist, chamber and freelance musician. She teaches viola at the University of Auckland.
