Dr Alvin Wong

Dr. Alvin Wong is an internationally acclaimed cellist known for his “warm, hall-filling sound” and “remarkable technique.” He is currently Associate Professor of Cello at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, and has held faculty positions in Germany, Australia, and the U.S., where he led program reforms and postgraduate research in strings and chamber music. A soloist and chamber musician with performances across five continents—including at Carnegie Hall—Alvin is a champion of contemporary music, premiering works by Pulitzer, Grammy, and McArthur-winning composers. He is a founding member of the Ormond String Quartet and has recorded on Tall Poppies Records. His research explores cross-cultural hybridity and artistic practice, supported by grants such as the Hanson-Dyer Research Award. As Deputy Director and Head of Strings of Ostfildern Music School in Germany, he led institutional strategy and talent development. Alvin trained at Eastman, Indiana, and Yale under János Starker and Aldo Parisot, and his students hold positions in leading orchestras and conservatories worldwide.
