Edith Salzmann

German/ NZ cellist Edith Salzmann studied at the Music Academy in Detmold, Germany and at Indiana University Bloomington(USA). Her teachers included Janos Starker, Irene Guedel  and chamber musicians  Tibor Varga, Rostislav Dubinsky and Piero Farulli.

She was a founding member of the Corda String Quartet, was artist in residence at the Banff Centre for the Arts and was invited to perform at  festivals such as Festival d’Ile de France, Festival ‘The Sound of Israel”, Orlando Festival, Tibor Varga Festival, Sion, the Accademia Chigiana, Italy, the Norfolk Festival (USA), Tage Neuer Musik Darmstadt and many others. 

As a chamber musician and soloist she has performed in major concert halls, such as the Berlin and Cologne Philharmonie, the Alte Oper Frankfurt, Gasteig Munich, the Barbican London, and the Tonhalle, Zuerich , Lincoln Centre New York with, amongst others, Heinz Holliger, Hansjoerg Schellenberger, Christoph Poppen, Eduard Brunner, Gustav Rivinius, Menahem Pressler, Nobuko Imai, Luba Edlina, Charles Castleman and Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi.

Since 2005 she is the artistic Director of the NZ Pettman National Junior Academy , a privately funded national pre-tertiary scholarship programme. She is the artistic Director of the International Akaroa Music Festival , an annual chamber music and masterclass festival in New Zealand that she founded in 2006, and the Musiktage Merzig festival in Germany. Since 2014 she is artistic Director and member of the Pettman Ensemble, a flexible touring ensemble from New Zealand and Australia dedicated to performing chamber music from early classical repertoire to music of today. Australasia’s most talented young artists will join the ensemble to perform music for larger groups. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Edith is a Naxos recording artist and has recorded for Stradivarius Milan, Atoll records, New Zealand and for radio and TV in Europe, the US, Canada, Asia and Australasia.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

She is a sought after teacher, who had Senior lecturer positions for cello at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch and the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Currently she is acting lecturer for cello at Melbourne University. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

In 2019 /20 she will tour the UK and Europe as well as give masterclasses in New Zealand and Australia and record for Naxos and Rattle Records.
